Press release: A family from Afghanistan, supported by OPU and Forum HR, lodges a complaint against the Czech Republic with the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child

On Wednesday, 22 June 2022, a family from Afghanistan lodged a complaint with the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. The family been detained in Czech immigration detention for more than a month in 2019. They argue that by depriving their children of their liberty, the Czech authorities acted in violation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This is the first such complaint against the Czech Republic. The Committee’s decision may thus set a precedent for similar cases in the future. The Committee has repeatedly stated for 10 years that immigration detention of children is always in violation of the Convention. Last year, it urged Czechia to completely abandon this practice. The family was supported in filing the complaint by the Organization for Aid to Refugees, Forum for Human Rights and the law firm of JUDr. Maroš Matiaško.
